The Nomatsu Loop Line, which doesn't operate in a loop and doesn't provide transfer information late at night... Thanks to its long lines, unlike in real-world Japan, the railways in the “Nomatsu Metropolitan Area” of my fictional country “Nomatsushima” still have several late-night last trains departing after 1:00 a.m., so much so that you don’t even notice the COVID-19-related service reductions that have brought last trains earlier elsewhere. For example, the last outer loop train on the Nomatsu Loop Line bound for Kamioka departs Nomatsu Central Station at 1:04 a.m. and arrives at its terminus, Kamioka, at 1:23 a.m. The last westbound train on the Nomatsu Metro Line 3 bound for Shibukawa also departs as a Semi-Express from Izuno-shi Station on the Inaba Express Railway Line, which it directly connects to, at 11:16 p.m., as a Semi-Express, and arrives at Tsurumatsu Station, managed by the Inaba Express Railway, at 12:37 a.m. From there, it enters the Nomatsu Metro Line 3 and operates as a local train. It departs Tsurumatsu Station at 12:38 a.m., arrives at Futagawa Station, located on the western side of the Nomatsu Metro Line 2, Nomatsu City’s other loop line, at 1:02 a.m., and arrives at its terminus, Shibukawa Station, at 1:30 a.m.
My fictional nation, “Nomatsushima,” is located between Hokkaido, Sakhalin (Karafuto), and the Kuril Islands. One of the distinctive features of its railway system is that, like the Ginga Tetsudo Bus in Higashi-Murayama, Tokyo, it prioritizes passenger convenience over profitability. Furthermore, the “Soya-Nomatsu Strait Line” operates between the capital, Nomatsu, and Wakkanai in Hokkaido; during morning and evening rush hours, some local and rapid trains run directly to Horonobe and Otoineppu on JR Hokkaido’s Soya Main Line. Trains operate with a conductor on board (two-man operation) within the Nomatsushima National Railway section, while the JR Hokkaido section operates with the one-man operation system. Trains run in 5- or 6-car formations within the Nomatsushima section, but the rear four cars are detached at Wakkanai Station, resulting in a 1- or 2-car one-man train. Furthermore, HR (Hokkaido Railway), a Hokkaido subsidiary of NNR, has announced plans starting in mid-2024 to improve rail accessibility in the Soya region. These include the double-tracking and electrification of the Soya Main Line, increased train frequencies, the introduction of IC card compatibility, and the reopening of the Tempoku Line, which was shut down in 1989.
