On October 2024, the first woolly mice have been created by Colossal Bioscences. Targeting 9 genes, including 7 for fur, 1 for melanin, and 1 for metabolism, it aims to identify key traits for genetically engineering a cold-tolerant, hairy elephant. Rather than directly bringing us closer to the mammoth, it validates the edits and progress for creating one within a few weeks, rather than 2 years.
