What happened in 2024-2025? Colossal Biosciences engineered some of the most genetically-edited animals up to date, quoted "dire wolves". While technically not true dire wolves, in the genetic sense, and are mostly grey wolf, about 14 of their genes are meant to replicate the extinct canids' robustness, size, and skeletal features. Their fur is white because northern dire wolves had pale/white tones in their coat and they needed to bypass the blindness and deafness triggered by the genes responsible for dire wolves' coats, so they reduced dark and red pigment genes. So, why did Colossal Biosciences do this? As of today, the wolves were meant to generate conservation and technology for wolves, as well as improve genetic editing of mammals. Another thing that came out of this is non-invasive blood cloning that does not stress out donors. It also potentially supports the rescue of the red wolf.
