Short History: FX (short for Fox Extended) launched in June 1, 1994 as the 1st cable channel under its cable TV division, FX Networks, Inc. (later Fox Networks Group). The channel's lineup initially consisted of reruns of classic TV shows, most of which came from 20th Century Fox Television. Despite this, the network had some original programming. Most of it, however, focused on viewer interactivity & were mostly live. In 1997, FX's format shifted, now including more current programming, again sourced from 20th Century Fox Television. The channel would also produce more original programming, with the focus on interactivity being phased out. By this time, the channel referred to itself as "Fox Gone Cable" as it appealed to 18 to 49 year olds, the same demographic that its FTA counterpart Fox had. In 2000, AOL, Inc. would merge with News Corp USA forming AOL News Corp. Around this time, Fox began aiming at a more general audience, with FX filling in the niche as AOL News Corp's young adult channel. By 2004, while still branded as a young adult channel, the channel began positioning itself as a "non-premium" counterpart to HBO, Showtime, & Starz, emphasizing original shows with high-quality value & mature topics. AOL News Corp's name was altered in 2007 to News Corp AOL. News Corp AOL later changed its name to Fox Media in 2013 as a way to emphasize its flagship assets which included the Fox Networks Group (which owns FX). The channel would drop reality shows & sitcoms from its lineup in 2016, transitioning full-time into a channel focused on high-quality dramas & comedic programming. Today, FX airs a mix of high-quality dramas & comedies aimed at young adults ages 16-51.
