As I mentioned in my last project, I may have been consuming a whole bunch of STH media recently. (Comics, shows, games, etc.) So, naturally, I've been drawing a lot of fanart for the series recently. I figured this would be a good time to go over the difference between using a reference and stealing art. (This explains the distinction as I understand it, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!) As you can see, I used someone else's art to hash out my pose, facial expression, etc. However, the peice I made is very different from my reference, both stylistically and design-wise. Now, copying or tracing art for study is different that claiming it as your own. The way I learned to draw MLP characters was by copying and tracing poses from the show. Over time, I was able to incorporate what I learned from that style into my own unique work. If I just traced a frame from the show and claimed it as my own, that would be art theft. Another thing I like to do is credit the artist or creator of my references, as I did below. Just try to be mindful of where your inspiration comes from! I hope this helped clarify the distinction between art theft and inspiration. Please bear in mind that this is the distinction as I understand it, and please let me know if I got anything wrong or need to add something! I hope y'all have a great day, and stay safe! :3 (Also please let me know if you want me to do more humanizations.)
