“Pancakes?” I hear my mum ask, but I’m already rushing out of the door. The way new students are always late for their first day at their new schools proves my life is just a fairytale. I slip on my tennis shoes, pristine and white thanks to my mother dearest, and hook my bag over my shoulder as I sprint out the front door. I swear everything happens on purpose. I run, like literally sprint, to school, which only takes me five minutes but I’m still somehow late. And I don't know where the office is. I groan out loud, rubbing the spot between my brows as I wander around the empty hallways. No lockers, meaning you have to carry your bag with you for the whole day. If only there was a teacher around that I could ask for directions. And the uniform.I opted for flair trousers over the tartan skirt, obviously in the school’s colour of black. But black flair trousers and white tennis shoes do not go well together. The blazer is one size too big, and the shirt’s collar is itching my skin, but I can't afford to be ruffled. At least we don't have ties. I remember how my old school did, and how it would not wrap properly and I had to keep adjusting it. Finally, I spot a kind looking janitor and walk up to him. “Excuse me, can you show me where the principal’s office is?I’m new here so I need my timetable.” He looks up, then looks back down and replies,“Down the hallway, turn left, walk down that hallway until you reach the hallway opposite the staff room.Third door down that hallway.” That’s…a lot of hallways. I nod my thanks as I follow the instructions he gave me. “This hallway…then turn…then that hallway,” I murmur as I repeat the instructions in my head. It takes me a while, but I do eventually find the office, with a huge sign that says Principal. I breathe in, breathe out, then knock on the oak door thrice before stepping back and waiting. A grunt,“Come in.” I walk inside, remembering to close the door behind me and keep my eyes down as I try to use manners to make up for my punctuality. “I was expecting you twenty minutes ago, Miss Ross.” I feel a blush rise up. “I’m sorry sir, I swear I sprinted to school, but then I got a bit lost so I had to ask a janitor for directions, and by the way, he deserves a pay rise for knowing the way to your office, and I had to follow his directions—” “Miss Ross.” “Yes?” A chuckle. And I look up to see him smiling, his grey hairs styled and his warm, brown eyes bright with amusement. “Welcome to Moodbriar High School. You are in Year 9, so we placed you in 9C, with Mr Sanchez as your form tutor.I’ve called one of their students to show you around, she should be here in a few minutes.Or he, depending on who Mr Sanchez sent." “Ok.” “So do you want to sit down, Miss Ross?” I sit on one of the chairs opposite his own and he sits as well. Passing me a sheet, he turns serious,“I’m sorry, 9C is one of the classes where the new kids or what people call the ‘bad’ kids are.It was the only classroom with spaces.” I wave my hand, grabbing the timetable and checking the lessons. As long as they don't affect my learning, I think I’ll be fine. All I need is one true friend, and I'm sure the other classes will accept me. “In your old school, you were one of their top students, so we placed you in Golden Maths, Top Set Science, and Golden English. You have very impressive test scores, Miss Ross.” “I…just had nothing else to do, and my hobby for reading helped a lot as well,” I replied, looking around the room. It had an autumn set of vibes, with the walls painted a peach colour and an oak bookshelf filled with papers.A window behind him overlooked what seemed to be the playground. The only reason I studied was because I found going outside boring, so I usually just studied for a few hours then rewarded myself by gaming or watching Netflix on my laptop. A knock sounds on the door, and the principal once again tells them to come in. A girl with dyed neon green hair comes in, chewing gum.Her bright green eyes actually suit her hair, and I’m not sure if she realises that, but I love the look. She has a nose piercing, and her skirt is surprisingly pretty, ending just above her knees. The pattern on it is amazing. Freckles dot her nose and cheeks, and she tilts her head as she stares at me. I’m not pretty like her, with my platinum blonde hair, pale skin and light blue eyes, I look like a daughter of the Ice King. And to be honest, winter is my favourite season. “Cassandra, this is our transfer student, Silver Adeline Ross.” Why…is he giving my full name? She smiles, and I smile back. “I’m Cassandra, but you can call me Cassie.Only my mum and the principal call me Cassandra.I love your middle name, maybe I can call you Addie.” I laugh awkwardly, because that actually suits me,“Yeah sure.I would love that.”
