The bluebuck was a medium-sized ungulate native to southern grasslands of Africa. Unlike many mammals, they possessed silver blue coats that stood out in color. Over the course of Pleistocene, their range receeded towards the tip. Shortly after the arrival of Europeans, competition with livestock, habitat conversion, overhunting drove the last populations to extinction, marking the first loss of megafauna in Africa, regarding the modern ages. Nowadays, only a few specimens of the animal remain in museums. Colossal Biosciences had announced the de-extinction of the bluebuck earlier in 2026 to bring back its important grazing niche, as well as to create technology for helping antelopes currently at risk of extinction, like the closely related roan and sable antelopes.
