The woolly mammoth was a hairy elephant species, adapted to cold ecosystems. Climate change shrunk their range and human hunting pushed mammoths to extinction, except on a few islands. Eventually, those insular populations disappeared, due to disasters and habitat loss. The closest living relative of the woolly mammoth is the Asian elephant, proving the fact that mammoths were elephants, themselves. Interestingly, the Asian elephant is currently being used as the surrogate species for genetically engineering the woolly mammoth's niche back into the environment. Colossal Biosciences is currently speedrunning the de-extinction of the woolly mammoth, from the start of Revive & Restore pioneering the project. Artificial wombs, edited cell lines, and woolly mice exist to demonstrate the technological advances for bringing back a functional proxy.
