Chapter 6 I stepped into the entryway of our house to hear Mama screaming her head off at Luna, AND Luna lashing out back, so I decided to go upstairs and continue writing poems. I’d show them to Mama after dinner. I decided that I was better at writing about the bad things that happen because I could let my emotions out more easily. Tears Like a Waterfall I hear Voices crack As they find out The bad news That those They love most Are gone. The bad news That makes A rock Rise in your Throat As you fight To push tears Down I see Tear-stained faces As they look back On the past. I feel Their pain As they feel mine I feel Their tears As I Wipe their Eyes Though The tears Keep on Coming Tears like Like a Waterfall At dinner, I can tell things are still tense between Mama and Luna, so I hold back on sharing my poems. Instead, after dinner, I ask to speak to Mama alone. I explain to her that Mrs. Morrow thinks I would do well with poems, and show her the two that I have made so far. Honestly, I thought she would be happy with the poems. You know how most moms help their children and encourage them? Well, Mama was exactly that. I guess Mama was in the mood to play favorites, what with being mad at Luna and all. “Char, these poems are absolutely beautiful! My office works with a publishing company that does a lot of publishing for kids. Do you want me to see if they can publish one, or both of your poems?” She says softly, after reading both poems. “Really? You would do that? For me?” I ask, spluttering in disbelief. “Of course, Char, I definitely would.” She replies, smiling as she envelopes me in a ginormous bear hug. “Alright,” she says, her serious face back on, “Time for bed.” “Awwwwww!” I say, putting on my puppy dog face as a retort. “Do I have to?” I end with fake tears, and she lets me read for half an hour before bed because of it. Yes!
again, all writing by me
