chapter 5: horse barn and secrets As night fell, I prepared to visit the horse barn.I wore thin, black leggings and a camouflage coat. Can't make any security alarms go off, I thought to myself.I stuffed a bow and arrow set into my bag along with a few sandwiches, and then I left. Long grass hid my footprints as it rustled in the wind. I scanned the area for anything that could trigger an alarm. I only spotted a single tripwire, but still, I stayed on high alert for anything hidden in the dark. Suddenly, a security camera swivelled and pointed right toward me. I jumped, and in an instant, I shot the camera with my arrow, shattering the lens. I sighed in relief. Then, I quietly crawled to the horse barn. I carefully stepped over the tripwire and tried to sneak across the creaky floorboards without making a sound."Willow?" a weak whisper called out.I froze. "Who are you, and how do you know my name?"I couldn't see anything in the barn. It was as if the night sky had swallowed it whole. Unexpectedly, a lamp turned on. I jolted in surprise and stepped back a bit."Jack? Is that you!?" I whimpered.The last time I saw him was when I turned five, right before he was banished from the village we used to live in. I never knew why.Scruffy, long hair covered his eyes, and cuts and bruises were all over his face.I panicked. "What happened?" I asked, my voice cracking and my eyes filling up with tears.[End of Chapter 4]
