Philmont is a 130,000 acre scout ranch in New Mexico. They host 7-day, 9-day, and 12-day treks where you carry everything you bring and hike miles each day. We did a 7 day trek. Day 1: Base Camp. No hiking this day. We get a tour of the camp and relax. Day 2: Lover's Leap camp. 2.6 miles of a hike and 1,000 ft of total elevation change. My pack was about 33 pounds (15 kilos.) Unstaffed Camp. Day 3: Miner's Park camp. 2.2 miles of a hike and 1,400 ft. of elevation change. We did rock climbing. Staffed Camp Day 4: Black mountain camp: 5.4 miles hiking and 2,000ish ft. of elevation change. This day we hiked up to a pass that went above 10,000 ft. Staffed camp. Day 5: Mine Camp: 6.3 miles hiking and also 2,000ish feet of elevation change. Staffed Camp Day 6: X's Pass: Unstaffed camp and no water. this camp is near the peak we went up the next day. Day 7: X's Peak: 9,400 feet We went to see the sunrise up here. Tooth of Time: 9,003 feet 10 mile hike into base camp.
