the boxes tell how many bombs are next to it (the numbers are read like dice). if there are no bombs it will be a black square. press on the flag to go in marking mode and now clicking a square will turn it into a marked square (which you mark because you think they are a bomb). there are forty bombs. the numbers next to the flag tell you how many flags you placed down.
