Chapter 8 It was Saturday. Elizabeth Wayne woke up from bed with a yawn. Her soft, curly brown hair was a mess. They were light bags beneath her eyes from staying up late performing extra chores. She had had a weird dream about yellow and white flowers. She looked out the window, the sun was already up which meant she had overslept. Normally Liz woke up at dawn, before sunrise to prepare breakfast for Emelia and the rest of the orphanage children. Ever since the death of Mrs. Jones, the new manager of the Bright Star Orphanage barely made time for the children. Liz had taken it upon herself to take care of each of the children, working outside day and night to earn enough money to keep Emelia in school and take care of most of the other orphans. But even through all that, Elizabeth rarely complained, she had accepted it as her duty to take care of her little sister. Each day had the same routine, wake up at dawn, wash and dry the laundry, clean the dormitories, take Emelia to school, prepare food for the other orphans, go the bakery and help out with dishes to gather some pocket money and afterwards help Emelia with her homework and go to bed after completing her other chores. Elizabeth looked at her calender it was the 17th. Then she remembered. A few days ago, Liz's distant aunt had paid them a visit and said she would take them into her hoe to give them a place to stay. Elizabeth was very grateful because it meant she could go back to school. Emelia had left a day earlier. Today was finally the day, Mai would leave for her aunt's. For the first time in a long while, Mai allowed herself to feel hope.
