Ruin I wear black In the blazing heat of the sun Because I am mourning my life. The days when I could see my reflection in a shop window And not turn away Not tug at my clothes Not shrug off the shirt I thought was cool Not mess up my hair To try and fit into the stereotype I handpicked Not cross the street, Running from that person Only to see them In the resin of cars In the back of my bass In handles of doors I will never open. In faces of keys I will never turn in a lock. In the shine of the world around me I see nothing but ruin. One day, I tell myself, One day you’ll be brave And you’ll show the world who you truly are. In more ways Than a baggy jumper That hides me well enough. The flag of me Yellow is the colour of soft sunshine, Of happiness, Of dancing in fields of wildflowers. White is the colour of peace, And hope, A white dove soaring gracefully on the wind Purple is the colour of flowers, And laughter, A life you can grow into. Black is the colour of darkness, That you can hide in if you’re scared A pair of arms to wrap around you. It’s all positive, And optimistic, And… fine. But then why do I feel so hopeless??
