I have resolved, in a spirit of levity, to present this undertaking as a jest, with the century of eighteen hundred as its setting; and I have done so in the following manner: I have caused the contents of my account to be translated into a more permanent form, under the appellation of ‘notoccupied.’ For it is my intention to undertake some endeavour that shall bring a measure of joy to this project, and I trust that those concerned shall have no cause to regret the actions they have hitherto taken. Let it be understood that peace is the proper and most honourable course by which to resolve the present circumstances, and this shall be accomplished through the agency of that same ‘notoccupied.’ I am most grateful that you have bestowed your attention upon the entirety of this epistle, and I confess that the amusement you derive therefrom doth bring a measure of warmth to my countenance. That you should find it so diverting as to provoke a laugh—a sound, I daresay, as rare and precious as a sunbeam in a London fog—is a compliment I shall treasure with no small degree of satisfaction. May the mirth you have experienced prove a balm to the spirit, and may your further perusals yield equal delight. I must confess that my discourse at present doth carry a most unmistakable air of Christian piety, and I find myself quite unable to suppress a gentle mirth at the observation thereof. The manner in which I have expressed myself, with such solemnity and devotion, would lead any discerning listener to suppose that I had but lately emerged from a most fervent sermon or a lengthy perusal of the Holy Scriptures. Indeed, my countenance and tone are so thoroughly imbued with that righteous character that I can scarce forbear a smile at the spectacle I present.
