TW!! - Mikoto T3 spoilers, mentions of mental illness, abuse, and other heavier topics!! Also, I do not have DID but I've done some research while making it! Imagine this, you've waited over a year for your favorite character's T3 song. From the announcement, the teaser and the thumbnail, the hype is real. Finally, the conclusion to a decently written character with DID, hopefully the theories are right! ...The dude I've been obsessed with for over a year is now suddenly bad DID rep. So why is Mikoto's character a bad portrayal of DID after Requiem? After reading through comments and threads, here are the main issues with how he was written: 1. He developed DID at 23 DID comes from intense childhood trauma, such as abuse or extreme stress. There was some good evidence before Requiem to theorize that he developed it as a child. For example, in his interrogation questions, we find out his parents divorced and that his father chose "work over family". This led to theories that he had to mature at a young age after his parents divorced, leading to extreme stress, or that his father was abusive, causing his DID to develop. You can't develop DID at 23, certain alters could front more BUT you cant develop it suddenly as an adult! If they wanted Mikoto to have trauma, I think it would have been brought up in the report. Its only mentioned that he had an average middle class family, so I am doubtful about it.. 2. The Evil DID stereotype This is a common trope in media where a system has 1 good alter and 1 evil alter. Before Requiem, there was hope that Mikoto would turn out to be a DECENT portrayal of DID. We had the Trikoto theory, which many people loved and made so much sense based on the evidence we had (Mikoto often associated with the number 3, RGB colour scheme in his Mvs etc.) I think if they had made trikoto cannon, it would have made everything make so much more sense. We had so much character development for John in T2, ("I just wanted to save you" in Double comes to mind) This would make you think that John went after people who hurt Mikoto, like his boss and coworkers, right? He did not. None of John's victims had done anything to Mikoto, how was he saving him? This honestly makes me the most upset because I was a diehard John stan after Double, T2 did such a good job at humanizing him, only for that to be thrown out the window after T3. Its honestly quite offensive considering that a large part of Mikoto's fanbase are systems themselves. I could not imagine how upset they must be after thinking they finally found a character with decent DID rep. DID isn't well understood in Japan, while it is an explanation, its still not an excuse for his poor writing. While I don't agree with how his DID was handled, I think the whole toxic work culture part of his character was well done. While I am EXTREMELY disappointed with how his character turned out, he is still by far my favorite character, all of his songs got me through the most academically stressful year so far, and I very heavily relate to him! Requiem is a good song music wise (A lot of ppl will disagree) and his Chimera cover is heavenly. It just sucks to see how Milgram fumbled your favorite character overnight. I don't like seeing criticism of my favs usually, but I have to agree with everyone here. I'm voting him innocent, Mikoto is such an important character to me and it feels wrong to vote him guilty after being dedicated to him for so long (I have A SHRINE dedicated to him) That's it for now! I'm sorry its so long... I'm obsessed with Mikoto and I had a lot to say about his T3 :( (Now I'm gonna cope by writing my Milgram band au fanfic, I'll make 090909 and 0309 cannon trust)
