Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys melanocytes—the cells that produce melanin (pigment). This loss of pigment causes milky-white patches to appear on the skin, hair, or inside the mouth. It is not contagious and affects all skin tones. Causes: While the exact cause is still researched, vitiligo is widely considered an autoimmune condition. Genetics, severe sunburns, stress, or exposure to harsh chemicals can trigger or increase the risk of developing it. Common Symptoms: The primary sign is smooth, lighter, or white patches (macules) on the skin. It frequently begins on sun-exposed areas like the hands, feet, arms, and face, or around body openings (eyes, nose, mouth). Hair growing in the affected areas may also turn white or gray. Types of Vitiligo: Non-segmental (Generalized): The most common form, where symmetrical white patches appear on both sides of the body. Segmental: Less common and more frequent in children, where patches are localized to just one side or area of the body. Associated Risks: Because the affected skin lacks protective melanin, it is highly sensitive to sunburn. It is also occasionally linked to other autoimmune issues like thyroid disorders.
