Chapter 1 I was born like any other cat. I couldn't quite see yet, but I could hear. And I remember one thing from back then: “Don’t go out the door,” Mother would say. So, that’s what I did—I just stayed inside no matter what. Even though I really wanted to know (and still do) what was past the door, I followed my mother’s rule. But that all changed soon… Chapter 2 Soon, I had a playdate with a puppy from upstairs. His name was Ranger, and he was the only puppy who was friendly to me. When he came, I made sure to tell him, “Mother said not to go through the door, so we probably shouldn’t go near it.” And of course, Ranger replied with, “Okay, I dare you to.” So, I responded back with, “No. I know the rules, and so do you.” And soon enough, the playdate was over. Now that I had been dared to go near the door, I kept thinking about it all day long—almost as if it was burned into my brain. I tried to forget about it, but I couldn’t. Once the playdate was over, I told my mom how Ranger had dared me to go past the door. She told me all about how we shouldn’t do tricks for treats, saying that even if we are dared to do something bad, we shouldn’t do it. Chapter 3 Everyone is asleep. I might go past the door. I start walking towards it, No I can’t… Well I think I will… I go past the door “Woah, this is cool. Oh, look it's that human writing, I think I learned how to read it—" "huh?” Someone inside heard me. I run away. “Anyways,” I start talking to myself again, “N.Y.C. Huh, wonder what that means.” I start moving forward. “I think it means ‘no yogurt cups’.” I walk into a dark creepy alley, “huh?” I hear someone wake up and something was now standing right in front of me. “You new to town there, fella?” His voice was less intimidating than I thought it would be, in fact it almost sounded cartoon-ish. “Well—” I said a bit more calmly. The stray cat interrupted with, “That’s a fine coller you got there. What dumpster did you find it in?” “What?! Do you mean like, where the garbage goes?” I replied, “You call it garbage, I call it treasure.” the grey striped cat responded. “Well, anyway, my human gave it to me when I was two days old.” “What do you mean by ‘human’” he asked. “I ran away from home” I explained quietly to keep rumors from spreading. “Oh, I thought you were a stray… Say, I haven't introduced myself! I’m Jerry. Jerry A. Benson” Jerry said. “I’m Fluffy. Fluffy J. Willams.” I replied. “Also,” I continued, “Do you know what ‘N.Y.C.’ is?” “Well, yeah!” Jerry exclaimed. “It's where you’re at! It stands for ‘New York City’!” “Oh, okay. Uh, thank you!” I say walking away. “Wait!” Jerry yelled. He came running. “You don’t—” he panted heavily, then caught his breath. “You don’t think you’re gonna leave without me did ya? ‘Cuz we only just met!” “Alright” I say “Lets go,”
Chapter 4 We started walking across the streets pridefully. HONK! “JEEZ, ‘O, PETES!” Me and Jerry exclaim at the same time. I hear a human curse at us. “Thank You!” Jerry yelled to the person. He did not at all sound sarcastic. “You see,” Benson said. “Humans love complimenting me.” “You understand that he just said one of the rudest things that those humans can say to us.” “You sure?” “I’ve been around 3 humans in one household. I think I know what human language is when I hear it.” I replied. HONK, HONK! SLAM! “@&*!” I hear a human curse just barely between the ringing in my ears. “That's the second time I hit a cat this year!” And my world fades to black… “Daddy, is the kitty okay? Even after you hurt-ed it?” I hear a little girl say. I open my eyes. “Daddy, he’s okay! He’s okay!” “Yes I can see that.” The dad said. Then, the vet walked in. “The results say,—” “He’s okay! He’s okay!” The little girl interrupted. I get up and run away. “Too many noises.” I think to myself. Looking back to see the vet try to catch me. HONK, HONK! I wait, this time. I make my way to Jerry. Chapter 5 About a week later, my leg heals. “I don’t think I’ll ever again leave my house. Bye, Jerry.” “Bye.” I come back to see not only my mother’s, but also all three of my humans with this face: “And where exactly were you at?” Mother asked with the tone that usually means I’m in trouble. “I-I-I got l-l-lost.” I lie. “No, you didn’t.” Mom replies. “I can see it in your eyes.” I gulp. “I g-g-got curious.” I say. This time, telling the truth. “This was all that Ranger pup’s fault wasn't it?” “Well—” “Come on,” Mom orders. “We’re going to see Ranger’s mom.” “Mooooom” I groan. Chapter 6 “Hey Ranger.” I say. “Hey Fluffy.” He replies. “Hey,” I whisper “Come on!” We go out the door… Woah-h-h-h… We entered the butcher shop. A sharp knife dropped. SLICE. Dead. Dead as a doornail. First words I heard from Death. “Curoisty Killed The Cat.” The phrase was passed on. And the Humans with Cat Tongue could translate. The phrase was all over town. THE END
