It had her main friends, but it was different from last year's, and she liked last year’s dynamic. When the girls had come back from getting lunch trays, the important discussion of everyone’s homeroom partners commenced. “I got that weird girl, Leigh, that I used to pick on on the bus,” Fern said. “I am so sorry,” said Charlotte. “She’s so weird... She and her weird friends wear tails on their backpacks.” Sophia made a yuck face. “I bet they are from those awful fur farms.” Fern suggested. Sophia wrinkled her nose. “Fern. Why do you even know about those?” “Because I know some things?” Sophia ignored her. “I’m sitting next to Adair. They’re almost as bad as all of them.” “They’re like a werewolf or something,” Charlotte added. “Maybe they’ll wolf out in class and you won’t have to sit by them anymore!” Fern joked. “I’m not laughing.” Sophia glared at Fern. Fern shrunk back in her seat. “You know, I think you’d fit well with those kids.” Sophia joked. “You guys think so?” She turned to the other side of the table. Most of them weren’t even listening, but they still nodded their heads or murmured in agreement. Charlotte gasped. “Oh my gosh, Sophia, I just had, like, the most perfect idea.” “Spill.” Sophia leaned in and Charlotte whispered something in her ear. Sophia squealed with delight. “You’re like, so awesome, Charlotte. You want me to tell her?” “YES.” Sophia giggled. “Okay, Fern, so… How would you feel about hanging out with Leigh’s group for a month?” “I would hate that. Please. No.” “Please? Just thirty days. I dare you.” Charlotte pleaded. “Nope. Not happening. Nuh uh.” Fern shook her head and turned away. “Wait. Fern. Hear me out.” Sophia tapped her on the shoulder. “You like Arlow. Right?” Fern narrowed her eyes. “Um.. Yes.. And?” “Well, I have a lot of connections, because of all my friends. You’re lucky I make time for you,” Sophia said jokingly, but it still made Fern uncomfortable. “Yes, Sophia!” Charlotte agreed. “I know a couple people, and with a bit of time, I think I could set you up with him.” Fern turned to face Sophia. “You would do that?” “Yeah. I would. But we have to make a deal first.” Fern hesitated for a moment. “Okay, fine. I guess. What are the rules?” Sophia whispered with Charlotte for a few minutes. Fern ate her calzone that was soaked in orange juice that had spilled in her lunchbox.
“Okay. We’ve made some rules.” Sophia clapped her hands. “So, you have to sit at their lunch table for the entire September. And you have to hang out with them, preferably Leigh, outside of school for at least five days. Even longer would be better… And I might talk to Arlow myself.” Sophia thought for a moment. “Also, you can’t reveal that it’s a dare, and if she or anyone else asks why you are hanging out with them, you say something like, ‘I just wanted to try something new out.’” Charlotte scoffed. “That sounds the least like her, ever.” “Well, it works.” Sophia fixed her snake eyes on Fern. “So, you in?” Fern fiddled with the drawstring on her hoodie. “Fine. I’ll do it.” “Perfect. Don’t chicken out next week.” Soon after, the end of lunch bell rang, and the students filed out of the room. Fern didn’t want this, but she wanted Arlow. Maybe this change would be good? End of chapter. (Sorry for the shorter chapter this time, posting daily/every other day is a lot of work)
