Chapter 1: Rosa “[BLEEP], [BLEEP] [BLEEP] [BLEEP]!” exclaims a voice from above. The [BLEEP]? Why the [BLEEP] is there a gardening trowel on my squash? Well, probably because my upstairs neighbor dropped it. It would explain the cussing, anyway. A head of curly black hair pops up from the balcony above. “Hey,” she says. “Can you get my gardening trowel for me, please?” “Sure.” I dust myself off, grab the trowel, and head into the apartment. “Rosie! How’d it go?” asks my mom. “Good, until our neighbor dropped her gardening trowel onto my squash. Going to have to assess the damage in a minute,” I reply, heading for the door. I hop up the stairs a level, and knock on her door. It opens. “Here you go.” I hand her the gardening trowel. “Thanks!” the girl replies. “I’m Iris, by the way.” “Rosa.” Iris has on a black tee-shirt with a set of characters from Heartstopper. She also has on ripped black skinny jeans and black converse. Her hair is in a bob. She looks really [BLEEP]ing cute. I’m jealous. My blue overalls and yellow tee-shirt are convenient, yes, but not very cute. And I’m certain my old white tennis shoes are not helping matters. “Rosa? Helloooo?” I snap out of my trance. “What? Sorry, I spaced out for a sec.” She huffs. “I said, what school do you go to?” “Oh–East Side Community High School. You?” “Wait, same! What grade are you in?” “Rising 9th.” “Me as well! I just moved here two months ago.” “Ohh, that would explain why I’d never seen you before. I was wondering about that.” “Yeah…” she hesitates. “Anyway, thanks for bringing me back my trowel.” “No problem.” “...see you around?” “See you around.” I head back towards the stairs, and hear the gentle click of her door as she shuts it behind me. Well, I think to myself, that was one way to start a Saturday.
