All the stuff!! Chapter 5: Ellie As I walk into history class, I take a deep breath in, then slide into my seat just as the bell starts ringing. Mr. Bolwen eyes me but does not comment. He turns to the whole class and says, “Good morning, wonderful historians! I hope this day finds you well. Now, who would like to present their project first?” Oops. I suddenly remembered why I went to the library this morning. I was going to do my history project. I nervously scan the classroom, wondering if anyone else was as unlucky as me. Everyone looks eager except for one person. Sam. Just my luck. Now we have to get stuck in detention together for like, a million weeks. I sink lower in my seat, hoping he doesn’t call on me. His eyes scan the room. “Hmmm… how about… Ellie? How would you like to go first?” “Oh… ummmm…” I stammer. “I didn’t get a chance to finish it.” “I gave a week! How could you possibly not have enough time to finish? That is detention young lady!” I don’t respond. I’m too busy becoming one with the chair. “Fine then. Let’s move on. How about Sally?” I turn to look at my best friend, Emmie and shoot her a look. She just shrugs her shoulders. Great friend. Of course, Mr. Bolwen decides to do girl boy girl boy order, so now it’s Sam’s turn to confess. He blushes and deep bright red. At least I got some entertainment on the side of my embarrassment.
Chapter 6: Sam I don’t know what’s going on between me and Ellie, but she sure is having fun watching me stammer through my explanation of why I didn’t finish my history project. Aaaand now I have detention. With Ellie. Great. Brrrring! Finally! I have never heard a more glorious sound than the bell. I rush out the door to art. Finally, something I’m actually good at. With art, I sort of just zone out and draw whatever’s on my mind. I feel as though art just comes naturally to me and I can just draw what I feel. It doesn’t have to make sense. It just is. Today we use watercolors. I love watching the paint seep through the paper until it has made a cool, water stain sort of thing. I make a thing that in some way resembles a beach. Huh. Cool. I just have one more period until lunch break, which at Rosewood High, is the most cherished thing ever. You get exactly one hour to go anywhere you want. The next period goes by in a blur. I meet up with my friend Jack and we head to our favorite (and only) burger spot. Of course, as if the universe decided that they wanted to torture me even more, Ellie is there. Obviously this day hasn’t been disastrous enough already. I step into line so I can place an order, hoping she doesn’t see me. She does. We don’t talk, but throughout the meal I occasionally glance at her, and she’s multitasking between eating, reading and glaring at me all at the same time. Only Ellie would do that. When we get back to school, I sit through math, and English, and gym. The final bell for the end of school rings, and I think, Finally, I can just go home and not worry about school for the weekend. Then my stomach drops. I remember that I have detention with Ellie. With a heavy heart, I turn and walk the deserted halls of Rosewood High, dreading the impending disaster.
