Welcome to SandWorks! This is a falling sand simulation game I made. Falling sand games are pretty cool, in my opinion. Let's play with them! The UI recently got a massive overhaul. Let's explain each option! When starting the project, you'll see an arrow thingy to the right. Pull it to the left to reveal a drawer filled with tons of cool buttons to press! Material Chooser This circle with arrows is what you'll use the most in SandWorks. It lets you switch materials using the arrows, or using the arrow keys. These instructions won't tell you how those work - instead, experiment and see what happens! I recommend playing with sand and water first. More materials will be added as time goes on! Time Scaler This is the button that says "1X speed." Click it to cycle through 1X, 2X, and 3X! This is basically my replacement for proper velocity, since I don't like figuring out collisions. Brush Sizer Self explanatory. Sizes available are 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 tiles. As the simulation gets updated, it will allow for even bigger grids, and even bigger sizes! Brush Mode Toggles from add to replace. Add only replaces air tiles. Replace, well, replaces tiles. Dog Mode Makes a dog follow your mouse cursor. Out of all of the features, I think this is the standout one. It's also the only button to make a sound! Tile Sizer Changes the size of tiles. On Scratch, the default is 12px, and on Turbowarp, the default is 6px. You can make it as small as 3px, and as big as 24px! Hopefully it won't lag so bad you'll need to set it to 24px, but just in case... Grid Clearer Clears the grid. Save/Loader Clicking it shows a list. This list is the grid. That's why it's called a "grid list." Right click it to open it's context menu. Then, click export to save it, or import to load an exported list. If it's buggy, you can always clear the grid to start over. Pause Button Pauses and unpauses the simulation. Replace all of X with Y Self explanatory. Replaces all of the first tile you answer with the second tile you answer. Music Toggler Toggles the music. It can get repetitive after a while, so feel free to turn it off whenever. Replace All with Replaces every tile with the tile you answer. I'll optimize it to use neighbor sand soon, but until then Turbowarp is the preferred way to use this. To add list cell x player explosions changelog IN project CHANGELOG Jul 03, 2026 (937 blocks) Project released _____________________________________________ Jul 06, 2026 (1237 blocks) Spread code has been refactored Material selected resetting when flag clicked has been fixed Plants have been added (it doesn't really act like a plant yet though) Dev note "This update was supposed to be much bigger and implement neighbor sand, but after trying that three times and it not working, I gave up for the day. Maybe next time. I do like how the plant material came out, though. Now it'll be easier to implement cell-x." _____________________________________________ Jul 07, 2026 (1269 blocks) (nice) Cell-X, oil, and acid have been implemented! Dev note "This update was originally going to be part of the last one with adding Cell-X, but then I had to go to bed. Today, I was thinking about how last update didn't really have that many things, and this one should have more to make up for it. So in this update, there's three more materials! Cell-x was mostly done, but oil and acid were made easier by some refactoring. Custom blocks are awesome! (I do still need to add neighbor sand, though... it's not running well at all on Scratch, even when the tiles are at 24px.)" _____________________________________________Jul 08, 2026 (1306 blocks) Gunpowder has been implemented The little rectangle thing around your mouse now matches the color of the material since that looks neat Fire has been tweaked to linger longer Dev note "Gunpowder is really simple, but while testing it I realized that fire was broken. I had to fix it, which took a while. The fix... sort of worked." _____________________________________________
I used this @griffpatch video as a tutorial for getting the grid working, then modified it to be 100% pen. If you want to play with grids, it's a great resource! https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/youtube/6ZuImk8-TYk Here are some other videos that were a good reference for me while creating this! https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/youtube/5Ka3tbbT-9E https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/youtube/L4u7Zy_b868/ https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/youtube/ArcHpsTXhb0 And here's @Penthusiasts project that made me think about ways to optimize it! https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1154593664 I also used @TestMuffin's stage size detector to make it fill the screen no matter the size set in the packager. This means that you can set the stage size to 640x360 in Turbowarp (which is automatically set for you) letting you enjoy the project in widescreen! https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/588493413
