A bit like pencil shavings, old seats, and a mild tinge of sweat from P.E. class. This was something Fern could count on, no matter the moment. It kept her grounded, it made her think, and it never changed. That’s what Fern held on to. It was the first day of school, going into seventh grade, which she had been dreading. She did well in school and had friends, but she missed the freedom of summer. She leaned her head against the window as the school bus left her street. She took a moment to look behind her. Most of the kids she remembered from last year, although there were some new sixth graders that had just begun riding on the bus. Fern jumped in her seat as the bus went over an unpleasant pothole. She shuddered and looked forward. Then she saw her. Leigh. Leigh was wearing an oversized pink palm puff hoodie and jean shorts. She had her back to the window and she had her legs pulled in close to her chest. With a book in hand, she rested her hands on the tops of her knees. Clipped to her backpack was a short faux fur tail. Fern glared at her and turned away, but Leigh wasn’t paying any attention. The bus lurched forward again, and she heard a sharp THUD! She jumped and turned towards the direction of the sound. It was Leigh’s book, slowly sliding towards her down the aisle. Leigh sighed and turned backward. “Could you please grab that for me?” Then she met Fern’s glaring gaze and winced. Fern grabbed the book coldly and handed it to her. She caught a glimpse of the tail again on Leigh’s backpack and she quickly pulled away. She lathered hand sanitizer on her hands. She gazed out the window again as the bus slowly pulled into the school’s parking lot. As the bus came to a stop, she grabbed her plain white backpack and stood up. Her short, black bob tickled her ears, and she wished she would have kept it longer. Fern hopped off of the bus and immediately found a few of her friends and walked inside the school with them. They chatted about how their summer went, and some of their boyfriends, before breaking off to go into separate homerooms. This year, Fern’s homeroom teacher would be Ms. Este. Fern walked into the room and set her binder down. She walked back out to the hallway to put her backpack away, and peered around. She silently cheered as she saw many of her friends walking into her homeroom. Content, she walked back into the room and sat down in her seat in the back of the classroom. Then, to her dismay, she spotted Leigh taking a seat near the front. Fern rolled her eyes and pulled out a book to read. A jab on her shoulder made her look up as a tall boy with messy ginger hair took a seat beside her. (Continue to notes and credits)
Fern tried to hold back a grin. “Hi, Arlow,” she whispered. “Hey, Fern,” Arlow smiled. Ms. Este walked into the room and stood in front of the Promethean Board. Fern quickly faced the front. “Greetings, everyone. As I’m sure you already know, I’m Ms. Este. I’ll be your homeroom teacher and history teacher. I hope you all understand that I do my best to make this year calm for everyone, and to do that, sometimes I have to make a few tough decisions. But I have everyone’s best interests at heart.” The class nodded. Ms. Este continued to talk about the rules and procedures for the upcoming year, and Fern caught herself almost drifting off several times. At one moment, Arlow leaned over and whispered. “This isn’t going to be history class, this is going to be nap time!” Despite the unoriginality of his joke, Fern chuckled. Ms. Este’s widened with alertness. She pointed her finger at them. “You two. Is this going to become a problem?” “Nope.” Arlow assured her. Fern shook her head, heat rushing to her cheeks. Ms. Este continued speaking and presenting something on the Promethean board. When the board began to glitch, she turned her back to the class and began to attempt to fix it. One boy stood from his seat and began to silently do the six-seven gesture. Fern cringed in disgust. She motioned to Arlow, “look what he’s doing… that meme is so dead.” Arlow nodded. “Yeah. He’s just tryna be funny, I think.” Ms. Este’s head snapped around. Instead of seeing the kid that was really being disruptive, her eyes immediately locked onto Arlow and Fern. “You two! Again?” Arlow and Fern dipped their heads to avoid eye contact. “What’s your name? With the black hair?” Ms. Este asked. “I’m.. Fern,” she said. “Why don’t you move up here next to this young lady instead.” The seat she was motioning towards was right next to Leigh! Fern slowly walked over to the seat with her binder. “There. Maybe you won’t cause as much trouble in the front of the classroom.” Fern snuck a glance at Leigh. Once again, she wasn’t paying any attention to her. As her teacher’s monotone voice droned on and on, Fern couldn’t help but think that this year was going to be different. And she didn’t like it. End of chapter. Thanks for checking this out! Stay tuned, it gets even better next chapter ;) The story is written by me! I made the cover on Sketchpad with various png images.
