Background on the Durvajin: The Durvajin originated as a judicial and advisory council of Terühist religious leaders and monks, bureaucratic ministers, and clan leaders, in the late 17th-18th centuries. It was created as a judicial and intellectual complement to the traditional Gosajin, the collection of nobility clan leaders who historically advised and held power over the Ghat. During the 1800s, however, it was gradually replaced by a new host of lawmakers, lawyers, and urban intellectuals heavily concentrated in the new cities of the south and Yuz-Pereim, as Ghats sought reform and increasingly modeled it off East Ovedian structures. It became a significant judicial power, and, though its leaders could still be appointed and dismissed at the Ghat’s discretion and the Ghat had ultimate veto power, it could still draft laws and appoint ministers or departments.
