The story is based off of the French Revolution. (It kinda sucks) STORY: “Manon!” Cossette called from the other side of the kitchen. “There’s a letter you need to deliver to the Queen.” She said, handing a sleek white envelope over. “ This is the first letter in months, hopefully this letter will do something to calm the riot outside. ” “The people have been at it for months. After I took this job, Ma quit as a servant.” I replied. “Now it’s just me supporting the family.” Cossette shook her head sadly. “There’s been a food shortage for so long. I honestly wish the Queen-” “Cossette. Remember, any bad mouth about the royal family can be severely punished.” I was warned. “I heard Madeline was thrown into prison last year for saying something about the King.” “Relax.” Cossette scoffed. “Everyone outside is boycotting the system. Now, speaking in favor of the Queen in public will get you punished.” I shuttered at the thought. “I should go deliver the letter.” She nodded and said, “See you around.” With that, she walked to the pantry to retrieve some food and I made my way to the Queen’s private suite. As I turned the corner of the hallway, Ms. Dubois appeared out of nowhere. “Ah, Ms. Lourent. It’s nice to see you.” “Hello Ms. Dubois.” I reply, avoiding eye contact with her icy gaze. “May I see that letter you are delivering to Ms. Antoinette?” She asks, putting her hand out. “I just need to see whom it’s from.” I handed the letter over reluctantly. “We aren’t allowed to open the letters.” “I know. After all, I just want to see the person who sent this letter.” She flipped the letter around and squinted her eyes. “Von Fersen. I see.” “May I deliver the letter now Ms. Dubois?” I asked, becoming impatient. “Well, you see, Ms. Lourent. I have to tell you something about this letter.” She began, “This letter probably holds escape plans for Ms. Antoinette. It’s your choice whether or not you are going to betray the people by delivering the letter. Look at the people rioting outside.” She gestured toward the nearest window where people were starving and shouting in anger. I freeze. “I’m sorry, I must've heard you incorrectly.” “You heard me as clear as day Ms. Lourent.” She responded. “Well, the decision's yours. I personally wouldn’t give it to Ms. Antoinette but I must hurry to a meeting. If you choose to not give it, please hand it to my colleague that’s waiting by the gate.” With that, she walked away. I shook off the nerves and continued down to the hall of mirrors. Gold. Everywhere. The halls are made of real gold and mirrors. Queen Antoinette awaits just around the corner for the letter in my hand. What Ms. Dubois said, still lingering in my head. It’s fake. She’s just trying to scare me. Still, my footsteps echo off the walls. I’m looking forward, focused on my destination. I stopped in my tracks, my feet wouldn’t move. What Ms. Dubois said, it really got to me. My body was moving without thought. I ran to the exit and ran to the gold glimmering gates where a man was waiting. “Manon Lourent. Is that right?” He asked. I nodded and handed over the letter. “You will forever be one of the heroes of France.” With that he turned and strode off to a carriage waiting for him. I didn’t know why but my chest felt light and I smiled.
