✧ The Light Between Us ✧ ☆•° Chapter 10 °•☆ Homeroom was a nightmare. My father had told Impa to protect me, since he couldn't send a full escort with me every day to school. Impa was one of my most athletic friends. She was a black belt in several different martial arts disciplines, not to mention proficient with the katana. (She was also an avid motorcyclist, but that likely wasn't a factor necessary for protection.) Therefore she was the obvious choice for a bodyguard- nondescript, same class as me, and most importantly, constantly close. She was meant to be in all the same classes as me. Father had specifically requested it. However, there had been some sort of mix-up. So when I arrived in homeroom, looking for a seat, I did not see Impa. I panicked. She was one of my few friends who were actually my age. I couldn't survive this day without her- for many reasons. I tiptoed to the teacher's desk and timidly asked, "Excuse me? Do you know which homeroom Impa Miyamoto is in?" The teacher looked up from his paperwork. "Who?" he said absentmindedly. He adjusted his glasses in a way that reminded me of Purah. "Oh, yes. Impa... Impa..." he muttered, tracing a schedule. "Room 217. Why?" "So, um," I faltered, "she's supposed to be in the same homeroom as me." "I suppose because you're best friends or something?" the teacher said, raising one eyebrow. "Afraid that doesn't qualify as a legitimate reason." This man was starting to get on my nerves. "Well, we are, but that's besides the point." I stepped forward, closer to the desk. "My father had made sure we were in the same homeroom." The teacher made a skeptical face. "What'd you say your name was?" "I didn't," I snapped. "It's Zelda. Zelda Hyrule." I have to admit, the look of shock on his face pleased me in a way my status usually never did. He scrambled to his feet, eyes wide. "S-so sorry, Miss Hyrule," he stammered. "I'll go fix it right away." He rushed out the door, leaving the class ready to start- and no teacher. I sat down in the very back row, a smirk on my face. But it completely evaporated when I saw who was sitting right in front of me. Link. He twisted around in his chair, grinning. "Oh, hey, Princess!" he greeted me. "Didn't realize we'd share some classes!" Great. This was just great. The last person I wanted to see. I frowned with my best stuck-up princess frown, the kind I practiced in front of the mirror for emergencies only. This was definitely an emergency. "Hello, Link," I replied haughtily. A look of confusion appeared on his face. "You didn't talk like that last time," he said. "Oh?" I hoped my aloof manner would scare him off. At least, I thought I sounded aloof. Maybe I just sounded arrogant. Link nodded slowly, as if finally understanding something. "Sorry, Princess, it's not my place to question you." He turned back around, covering his mouth with one hand. My frown deepened. "What are you getting at?" He didn't answer for a moment, then glanced over his shoulder, feigning surprise. "Oh, you were talking to me?" "Yes, I was talking to you!" I retorted sharply. "You're being awfully sassy for talking with the princess of Hyrule!" "Why, I thought you liked me better than that," he pouted. Oh, no. He was going to bring it up. It. I fumed silently, mustering all my willpower into my glare, willing him to stop talking. "Like when you sold me that Sheikah Slate-" "Shut up," I growled. He continued obliviously. "When you were showing me that camera rune, you even-" "PRINCESS!!" The door burst open and Impa shot through, breathing heavily, her face red and flushed. "I knew there was something wrong when I didn't see you this morning but-" She stopped abruptly when she noticed the eyes of everyone in the classroom riveted on her. Impa cleared her throat awkwardly and sat down next to me. "Anyways," she continued, much more quietly. "They let me switch over to your homeroom. I think everything should be fine now." Then she saw Link, who was staring at her intently. "What? What are you looking at?" she demanded. "Is that a Sheik Biker's Gang shirt?" he asked in an awed tone. "Yeah," she answered matter-of-factly. "I'm an official member. What about it?" He directed his gaze back towards me. "Princess, you have really cool friends," he said reverently. "Oh, she isn't just my friend," I informed him. "This is also my bodyguard. She's a black belt in karate. And judo. And tae-kwon do. She knows how to knock you out in fifty different ways with just her hands. Meet Impa." Impa smiled sweetly and waved. Link hurriedly scooched his chair away and raised his hands. "Um, hi," he said nervously. "And Princess, who's that?" Impa asked, jerking her head in Link's direction. "That's Link," I sighed. "An- acquaintance." "Link, huh?" Impa pursed her lips. "Link, as in the hero, Link?" "Yeah, I get that a lot," he chuckled, still clearly worried about what Impa might do to him. (continued in Notes and Credits)
"Don't worry," Impa said, waving a hand dismissively. "As long as you're nice to Zelda, I won't break your back." Link gulped and nodded. "Impa, you're too scary," I laughed. She winked. "That's the point." I was glad Impa was here. Not only would she protect me from physical harm, but she would also protect me from whatever Link had wanted to tell me. For once I was glad Father had insisted on a guard. I just couldn't understand one thing. Link had been pleasant before. Now why was he acting like this? Like a total idiot? "Maybe he finds you intimidating, too," Impa whispered, reading my thoughts. "H- how did you know what I was thinking?” I asked, startled. “Oh, it’s not hard,” she explained. “You’ve been glaring at Link like you want to set fire to him. Man, if looks could kill, he’d be toast.” “I- but I’m only-“ I stammered. “You’re a princess,” Impa finished. “Give him a chance.” I sat quietly as the teacher started homeroom, savoring what Impa had told me. Was it possible that she was right? I glanced back at Link, who was sitting up straight at attention. What had stayed unspoken still pained me, but… Maybe I’d give him another chance, after all. ☆•° Chapter 9 °•☆ https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1332108756/ ☆•° Chapter 11 °•☆ https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1333386599/
