4 minutes later “AH!!!!” I scream. “James, you scared me!” “Yes I did. You have a very girly scream, by the way.” “Shut up, I’m not the one that looks like a fricking CIA agent over here.” “You sure about that?” He gestures to my outfit, of which is completely navy. I roll my eyes. “So… you came.” “So I did.” “Why? I acted like a complete jerkface.” “I’m… not sure.” We lock eyes and a silent understanding passes between us. “So… what’s up?” “Ah, silver bird is looking grumpy but otherwise ok. Dunno why Father keeps pushing the bird thing onto me.” I make a serious, pondering face. “To become an accomplished silversmith, first you must complete the pilgrimage of the bird.” “Pilgrimage???” “Journey. Quest. Voyage.” “I know what pilgrimage means, I’m not an idiot. Isn’t that the thingie Tom Sawyer makes?” Crap on a cracker. Guess he knew I was awake after all. “Uh…” “Ah, still denying you were awake, huh?” “I was not!” “Lier.” “No I am not!” “By the way, your voice is all squeaky now, just FYI.” “Shut up, no it is not.” “Uh, if you’re trying to gaslight me, it’s not working. You sound like Mickey Mouse.” I take a deep breath, and try to de-Mickey-mouse-ify my voice. Thank the name of demented silver birds that it’s dark outside, I am blushing hard. “I do not sound like Mickey Mouse!” I say in a regular-ish tone. “Keeeep telling yourself that, Mr. Mickey.” “Shut up, Detective James.” “Detective James?” “What, you started it!” “Yup, but you called me Detective James. This is a cause for revolt.” “Revolt against who?”
