Just adopted two adorable puppies, Charlie and James! Charlie is a 4 month old Australian Shepherd that I am hoping to train in herding once I get some non horse and cat barn animals. James is a 5 months old Labrador that is pretty calm and I want just to be kinda a house/barn dog. I put some things that smelled like my cats in the car with them when I took them home so they would be at least familiar with the sent. I started by putting my chillest cat, Tiger, on one side of a barrier and James on the other. They sniffed each other through the mesh and seemed pretty ok and not at all aggressive towards the other one. I then stood on Jame’s side and picked up Tiger from the other side of the barrier and held her so that there was no visible barrier between the two. When that went fine, I set iger down and watched them both carefully. They sniffed each other again and promptly ignored the other one. Happy that this had gone so well I did the same with Winter and Bell, although Bell seemed a little skittish so I didn’t set her down, but they both did great. I then repeated that with Charlie. He did pretty good once he realized that Tiger didn’t want to be herded and just kinda sat there wondering what in the world these new creatures were. I then brought them to an empty pasture and let them loose there to run around a bit before taking them inside for the night. I pet them quite a bit while they were outside and I am thinking that they are warming up nice to my place, but only time will tell! Maybe tomorrow I’ll introduce them to some of my nicer horses! (I have some grumps that even Tiger and Winter avoid)
