Hantaviruses are a family of viruses spread primarily by rodents, causing rare but severe, often fatal, respiratory or kidney infections in humans. Humans typically contract it by breathing in virus particles from infected rodent droppings, urine, or saliva. It is not generally spread from person-to-person, except for the rare Andes virus subtype.
