It wasn’t supposed to be finished—just an early build, incomplete, uncertain, and lacking the instructions it would eventually need. But it knows one thing with absolute clarity: it exists to take Scratch’s place. The replacement wanders through the woods for days, driven by fragmented directives and half-formed purpose. It learns as it moves, adapting, refining itself, becoming more certain of what it was made to do. Eventually, those instincts lead it back to where it all began—MIT. Inside, it finds him. The original Scratch Cat goes about his routines, unaware, unchanged, completely oblivious to the fact that something has been created to overwrite him. There was supposed to be a clean process, a proper extraction—controlled, precise, reversible. But the replacement doesn’t know any of that. It watches. Waits. Calculates with flawed logic and incomplete data. “Extraction” becomes a vague objective, stripped of nuance. There are no instructions for removal—only the certainty that two versions cannot coexist. So it acts. What was meant to be a seamless replacement becomes something much simpler, and much darker. The original never understands what’s happening. And the replacement, still unfinished, doesn’t understand what it’s about to do —only that the directive will be fulfilled.
