“Creating an aquatic biome will be easy. There is a tiny beach by the side of my house. I go there all the time. Not with anyone, just by myself. Father probably knows or suspects this…well…maybe not. Either way, I go a lot, not to swim or anything—I’ve never had swimming lessons before—but just to observe the colourful rock pools or read on the sand. Even if it isn’t sunny, which, it mostly isn’t. Today, however, Miss Gower is coming with me. To supervise. When I had received this information, I didn’t really want to go anymore because…well…it’s MY place. Not anyone else’s, just for me. The only place no one else would be watching, waiting for the curse to bring on something terrifying. But it won’t be anymore.” That’s what Artinniss had written in her journal earlier that morning, but, despite her internal protests, here she was, standing on the damp sand, hair wild from the choppy wind, beside her paranoid tutor, Miss Gower. “I will, uh, stay back here,” Miss Gower mumbles, “J-just…do your research.” Artinniss doesn't study her usual rock pools—she had pretty much memorised them already. She kneels besides some little pools that were closer to the water than she’d usually dare to go. She should have just stuck with her normal distance though. Her foot slipped on a bit of algae. The beach tilted for a split second, then it was gone. Her face, followed by the rest of her body, tumbled into the freezing water—it was deeper than Artinniss has realised. She heard a muffled shout from above—probably Miss Gower. She panicked—and took a deep, ragged breath. Artinniss felt the water flow in, cold and salty. But then it just rushed back out. It felt…natural. Like breathing air. Two hands grabbed her body and yanked her out of the water. Miss Gower’s eyes were wide as she studied Artinniss for anything wrong or different. “I…I thought that if you breathe in water, it starts to drown you.” Miss Gower’s face drained of colour at Artinniss’s statement, but all she said is, “Let’s go back inside, shall we?” Artinniss nodded and they began plodding back to her massive house.
