✧ The Light Between Us ✧ ☆•° Chapter 7 °•☆ "Zelda!" Father shouted, bursting through the door. He grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the bed. "We need to go," he whispered. "Now." I stumbled forward and caught my balance on his shoulder. "What's going on?" "We're evacuating," he said hurriedly, running towards the door. I dug my feet into the ground. "I want to know what's happening," I said firmly. "Typhoon," Father replied. "The floods are coming." I gasped. I had only ever heard about them on the news. Terrible storms would ravage the coast and flashing headlines would tell us about the casualties. I had lived in Central Hyrule my whole life, and therefore never anticipated something like this. Yet here I was, in the danger zone. Father quickened his pace and I did likewise. My legs already burned. The poison had done its work well. "Do you think you can run?" Father asked. "I- I think so," I painted. He shook his head, but increased his speed to a brick jog. "We just need to get to our car," he said. I nodded and focused on my breathing. It was dry and shallow- not a good sign. The house I had been staying in soon disappeared into the outdoors. The sky was a gloomy, brooding gray, and swirling clouds loomed on the horizon. The waves were turbulent- higher than usual, foaming white at the caps. A stinging drizzle fell steadily, and a cool breeze whipped the rain into my face. My clothes, now damp, stuck to me as I ran. The wet sand sounded dull and cement-like against my bare feet. And above all, everything in me hurt. My lungs felt like they were on fire, and my muscles quivered from exhaustion. "Almost there," Father whispered encouragingly. The rain beat down on my shoulders. Father fumbled for his keys, then opened our blue Medoh CR-V. I climbed inside, grateful for a shield from the rain. Father started it up, then I realized something. "Where's Hoz?" I asked. Hoz was usually our chauffeur and butler / bodyguard / security. Father scratched his head. "I- don't know." he admitted. "I'll call him." A gale shrieked past us, and the rattle of the raindrops increased, battering at the car. "Let's just go," Father decided. I was worried about Hoz, but I knew we needed to leave. The car revved and I buckled up in anticipation of a bumpy ride. The CR-V shot forward, quickly merging with the highway. The rain pounded down steadily. I looked at the window, alarmed. Around us, an inch of water was already gathered on the road and sloshed around. "Please be careful," I said to Father. "The water's rising." "I can tell," he grunted. "The brakes are slipping." Lightning crackled in the distance, casting an electric glow against the raging clouds. My skin prickled. A sudden sheet of rain covered the car, completely blinding us. Father punched the steering wheel angrily and cursed. The windshield wipers were working at max capacity now, but we still couldn't see. Father had slowed the car down to a cautious crawl. "We could walk faster," he complained. I heard a rushing sound. I looked over my shoulder and my mouth fell open in shock. A freak wave was rolling to our car, climbing steadily higher. "Father!" I yelled. "Watch out-" The wave hit the car and we went spinning down the road. I screamed as we tipped to the side, teetering back and forth. Father jerked the steering wheel, trying to get the car back under control, but it refused to cooperate. The tires screeched as we careened off the road onto a grassy, muddy slope. The wave rolled past us, dissolving into a puddle of muck. Father jammed the acceleration, but the tires just sank into the mud. "I- I'm calling for help," he said, his voice shaky. My heart thumped erratically in my chest as Father dialed Hoz's number. I heard mumbling chatter. "You're- you're near our location?" Father said, relief evident in his voice. "You were on an errand?" More chatter. "Thank you," Father said and put his Slate away. He turned to me and took a deep breath. "Now we wait." ☆•° Chapter 6 °•☆ ☆•° Chapter 8 °•☆ ✧ Note ✧ Thank you for your patience! I know I haven't posted any new chapters in a while.
