Happy Bisexual Health Awareness Month! What is Bisexuality? Definition: It is defined as the potential to feel attraction to more than one gender, not necessarily at the same time, in the same way, or to the same degree. Beyond Two: While "bi" historically refers to "same" and "different" genders, it is not limited to just male/female and is inclusive of non-binary identities. Identity vs. Action: It is a self-identified label; someone can be bisexual without having had sexual experiences with multiple genders, or while currently in a "straight-passing" or "gay-passing" relationship. Psychological Counseling Services, Ltd. Why is it Unique? Fluidity: Bisexuality often embraces a more fluid understanding of attraction that may shift over a lifetime. Perspective: It allows for a unique, broad perspective on love and attraction that isn't limited by binary gender constraints. Strengths: Bisexuals often develop a strong sense of self and high empathy due to navigating a world that often ignores or erases their identity. Psychological Counseling Services, Ltd. Why is it Important? Visibility: Bisexual+ people are the largest group in the LGBTQ+ community, but face high rates of discrimination, mental health challenges, and erasure. Challenging Binary Views: Bisexuality challenges the strict binary of homosexual/heterosexual, promoting a more inclusive understanding of human attraction. Representation: Increased visibility, including public figures, helps dismantle harmful myths. Haven Psychology Is it Valid? Yes, Absolutely: Bisexuality is a recognized, valid, and natural sexual orientation. Dispelling Myths: It is not "desperate," a "phase," "confused," or "trendy". It is a legitimate sexual identity supported by over 120 years of research. Psychological Counseling Services, Ltd. Addressing Misconceptions Not "Desperate": The myth that bisexuals are constantly "available" or desperate for partners is a harmful stereotype (biphobia). Erasure: Many bisexuals face invalidation from both heterosexual and gay/lesbian communities, which is known as "bi-erasure". There are also "misconceptions". They aren't straights or gays looking for attention. Even if they are currently with a person of the opposite gender, they are still bi. If you have questions, please ask. Stay gold, love, lia ❤️
