The stars burned cold above him. Flintpaw stood on the soft silver grass of StarClan’s hunting grounds, his mangled back leg whole beneath him. He flexed it once, almost thoughtfully. Around him, the spirits of his ancestors watched in silence. Their pelts shimmered like frost under moonlight. A familiar gray tom stepped forward, eyes like chips of ice. “Why have you come with blood on your breath, apprentice?” Flintpaw lifted his chin. “I did what needed to be done.” A murmur rippled through the gathered cats. “Stormbreeze walks among us now,” another voice meowed. A RiverClan she-cat appeared beside him, her gaze sharp. “He claims innocence.” Flintpaw’s ears flattened. “He met with RiverClan in secret at Sunningrocks. I saw it with my own eyes. He betrayed ThunderClan.” “Did you hear his words?” the gray tom pressed. “I didn’t need to.” Flintpaw snapped. “The warrior code is clear. No loyalty to those outside the Clan. StarClan would not accept a traitor.” The stars seemed to flicker uneasily. “We accept those who uphold the code,” the gray tom replied carefully. “And we judge with all the truth before us.” Flintpaw’s claws slid from their sheaths. “I am loyal.” “Loyalty without wisdom becomes something else,” the RiverClan she-cat murmured. Before he could answer, the world shattered like ice beneath heavy paws. He jolted awake with a gasp beside the Moonstone. The cave was cold and silent except for Lockfoot’s steady breathing nearby. Lockfoot opened one eye. “Did StarClan speak?” Flintpaw hesitated only a heartbeat. “They said ThunderClan must remain pure.” Lockfoot studied him for a long moment, unreadable. Then he nodded once. “Then we will listen.” They left Mothermouth in silence. Dawn’s first light crept through the trees as they neared camp. A wail split the air. “Stormbreeze! Has any cat seen Stormbreeze?” Cats poured from the warriors’ den, pelts bristling. The deputy’s voice rose above the chaos. “Search the territory!” Flintpaw slipped to the edge of camp, eyes wide in practiced concern. Lockfoot moved beside him. “What troubles you, apprentice?” he asked quietly. Flintpaw forced his fur to lie flat. “Nothing.” But as patrols rushed out toward Sunningrocks, his gaze drifted to the forest beyond.
