As a kid, I would always read stories about the ‘good guys’. I analyzed and studied how they worked, reading how they thought and working my brain off to learn their strategies. Because… that’s all I could do about it. I never really found them appealing. Books, I mean. And I mean… Come on. No books about the ‘bad guys’? No stories about the antagonist’s perspectives? … What I wanted to know… was why? Of course, I soon learned it was preferred, and people didn’t really think about it. They thought their stories were enough to satisfy the reader, I guess. But I wasn’t satisfied. I was inspired. Because in stories, the good guys weren’t unique. They were always a thing. …It was the bad people who were. And I, the most rebellious kid in my family, Wanted. Of all things…. To be unique. To be seen by the world. I wanted to be…a legend. And that meant… well. Becoming a ‘Bad Guy’. My name is Brynn. And this… this is how my story begins. -♣- CHAPTER ONE Dim, early morning sunshine shone through the slightly tinted windows. The smell of bread hung in the air, and a slight autumn draft cut through the warmth of the fireplace. Quiet music played on the radio as Ivor put bread in the toaster. Once finished, he buttered and wrapped it. Ivor put it in a paper bag, and left a note. /Gone for a walk with B now, cya soon. Ivor./ He left the bag by the note before tying his shoelaces with a grin and fleeing out the door. As he stepped out into the fresh air, with the golden trees surrounding him, he felt grateful to live here. Ivor snatched his lime-green bike and pedaled off. His black-blonde hair waved wildly in his face as he sped down the winding gravel driveway. Finally, he reached the end. Waiting for him, was a girl- around his age. And she was clearly trying not to smile. “SOMEBODY is late.” She huffed at him, sticking her hands in her pockets. “Well, that SOMEBODY was hungry.” He grinned back at her fake scowl. “Okay, fine. You win. Let’s go, you doofus.” She stuck her tongue out at him. “I do? Wow. Brynn Gold, giving up just like that. Tragic.” In response, Brynn elbowed him- hard. “For the HUNDRENTH time, Ivor, no. I’m just figuring out how I’ll beat you up later.” She lifted her chin smugly at him, fiery passion flashing in her hazel eyes. “Right. Got it,” Brynn said, shuffling away a little as they began to walk. What with Brynn’s energy and enthusiasm… It was going to be a long day. - END OF CH.1
