The "North Star" (Polaris) holds a central place in Black history as a literal and symbolic map to freedom. Because Polaris stays fixed in the sky while other stars rotate, it became the most reliable compass for enslaved people escaping the American South. Enslaved people used the song "Follow the Drinking Gourd" as a coded map. The "Drinking Gourd" is the celestial nickname for the Big Dipper constellation.
