The premise of the story is that the protagonist is found in a moments-from-death scenario, and is given the gift of the Wings of the Sages (WotS)--A legendary power that crowns any sage the Monarch of the World. Soon after she gains the WotS, the protagonist overuses it to save herself, and it shatters and spreads through the world.
