Anyways, this is my first fanfic- like it or don't.... it's supposed to be calm and slow-paced, like a slice of life thing if you couldn't tell from the intro- also HEART IS SO CUTIE PATOOTIE </3 The Mind crouched over mechanical parts, not his, no, he would never take himself a part unless it was for repairs, but of a Ford F-150 from 2013 that he somehow got his hands on. He seemed quite astonished about seeing every bit of his research firsthand, especially how hot the metal was to touch, almost frying his heat receptors without gloves. He didn’t feel the sensation as painful, as one of his calibers would normally, but it felt almost exhilarating, which was a part of the fun for him. He whipped his head around at a knock on his door, since usually no one cared at the hour, let alone got up and walked around outside their dormitory, especially at 1:32:43 am. Yes, he understood it was late, he knew the consequences of staying late without charge, but the time flew him by likely. “Enter.” He commanded, his voice modulator buzzing with a lack of hesitance. The door cracked softly; the angel’s head popped through the sliver of darkness behind the door. “Hi, Mind.” The Heart’s voice whispered, almost scared to wake himself up, even if the two were awake wide as day. “Can I?” The automaton mimicked a laugh from the modulator, seeing as The Heart took it as an invitation. “Salutations.” The Mind deadpanned as per usual, wincing as he quickly pulled his hands back from the still burning exhaust. “If you would like the information due to your disability, I have been deconstructing model 2013 Ford F-150 for the past 5 hours.” “So that’s why I didn’t sense you at dinner.” The Heart on his knees next to the self-taught mechanic, he felt the heat radiating in his skin already the quiet mechanical whirs from The Mind’s head already ingrained into his senses, like The Heart himself also had those gears. “It’s hot in here…” “Thermal radiation of the mechanical elements, nothing more. The thermostat has not been increased since your last visit, Heart.” The Mind picked up the catalytic converter looking right into the metal that turned the harm into something less harmful. “Possibly it could be your omnisciently empathy, picking up on my heightened temperature. Apologies. I have my heat regulation protocols loaded to 100%. I predict you can hear the fans?” “It’s fine, don’t worry.” The Heart’s weighted hoodie dropped to the floor, leaving the angel in a comfortable cotton T-shirt. He sniffed a bit, shoulders tensing at the sharp smell. “Why do I smell oil? L-Like a lot of oil?” “Mechanical and biological constructions require sustenance. The Ford F-150 is not an outlier in the data.” Mind stated, his automated voice twinged with a sense of excitement. “It is quite interesting. As the job as the reduction catalyst,” He held the car part a bit closer to The Heart, allowing him to feel the radiating heat from the component. “This separates nitrogen oxide into its original components, nitrogen and oxygen. There is also an oxidation catalyst with translates monoxide into carbon dioxide, while also converting hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and dihydrogen monoxide.” “Oh.” The Heart shied a smile, mostly because he could feel and hear the hum of The Mind’s voice box when he computed something he was finding interesting, or more interesting than the data forced down his throat. “Tell me more.” The Mind blinked for a moment, systems pausing for a few ticks. “Confirmation request?” He stared wide-eyed at the blind man, an automated look of surprise, but surprise none the less. “Yeah! Go for it.” The Heart chirped. His eyes lit up for a moment, a gentle white glow on the components. His voice modulator mimicked a laugh, probably prerecorded, since The Heart heard a chirp in there. “Are you sure?!” The Heart could feel The Mind’s gears whirring a bit faster as he in a bit more into the automaton’s vitals. “Yes!!” The Mind’s voice, now pitched up slightly, started on a full rant, as a computer usually does. “Manual gearboxes are inarguably better than automatic gearboxes. Of course, drivers have their preferences, but manual controls allow for a higher success rate in driving through tough conditions, which provides safety and comfort to the driver. Continuously variable transmissions, while about 3 to 5 times more expensive than manual gearboxes, are also quite a feat, allowing the transition to be smoother and changes automatically to weather conditions. The most interesting part about continuously variable transmissions is that it is more fuel efficient than automatic and manual.”
“What gearbox does this one have?” The Heart leaned in a little bit toward the sound of the gears whirring in excitement. “I would have expected the 2013 model of the Ford F-150 to have a manual gearbox, but unfortunately, the gearbox is in an automatic variety.” The Mind stated, The Heart could hear that his voice very content for a man who’s usually so monotonous. “Do you request for more information?” The Heart leaned his head on The Mind’s shoulder for a moment. “Do you think that we could be Whole again?” “That inquiry was unexpected. I did not have time to load a response.” “I’ll wait. Take your time.” The Heart whispered, barely allowing his words to be picked up by The Mind’s microphone. “I doubt that us, as three separate components, could become Whole. We are different people entirely if we look at it from each other’s perspective.” The Mind stated, like a search engine giving you the exact response one would need. “Even if we merge into Whole, be it for the few minutes it usually is, we will inevitably combust and disassemble behind his eyes, Heart.” “I thought it would be different this time.” The Heart pouted. He picked at the skin of his thumbs, the motion tired and reverent. A dark red crimson bled out in beads, the soul of him dripping away. “Cease.” The Mind held The Heart’s hand for a moment. “That is bad for your health.” “I-I didn’t even know I was—” “I know. I understand. You’re just being illogical currently, Heart.” The Mind kept a hold of The Heart’s hand, the automaton’s hands cold and stiff, even through the gloves he wore on his hands to keep him from burning himself. “You’re being stupid!” The Heart snapped, pulling his hand away. “A habit’s illogical, yeah? I get it! I’ve heard it a dozen times over!! I’m sick of—” “Heart.” The Mind deadpanned. The Heart wasn’t given a look, he would have felt The Mind’s eyes pierce his skull. However, The Heart knew that The Mind just wanted to keep peace. That’s what the angel had done the previous day. As a squabble started, he ducked his head and continued what he was doing in silence. This was exactly what was happening now. “Sorry, Apollo.” The Heart whispered. “Fret not.” The Mind’s voice modulator hummed, Chonny’s voice caring underneath it all. The Heart’s shoulders tensed at the familiar voice playing in the replica of a voice box. It was still very odd to hear his own voice reflected to him, just pitched down an octave like the modulator was permanently broken. “Right…” “You should go to bed.” The Mind pointed out blandly, tracing his fingers over The Heart’s wound. “Your energy level is low.” “You should charge.” The Heart retaliated. “You don’t get to tell me what to do until you do that yourself.” The Mind hesitated for a moment. He knew he was low on battery, the malfunction, or at least what he called the malfunction, in his wrist causing it to shake wasn’t helping any better. He felt The Heart grip onto his hand. “Mind. Please?” “Goodnight, Heart.” The Mind would have sighed, but it came out as a whir behind the robot’s throat. He stood up, lending a hand to the blind angel and walking the two back to their dormitories.
