fallenshadow sat atop a small boulder not far from the water's edge. the resounding crash of the stormy waves felt something like a kithood lullaby. how he loved the ocean. they'd promised they'd come here together, he and graceshine. back when they were too young to even picture anything more than an ice-cold saltwater puddle outside the nursery. he was glad they did. even more so he was sorry. sorry he'd used it to break the news to her. sorry he'd even dared question her loyalty to her clan. sorry that he yowled and slashed, that they'd fought. glad that they'd made up. glad he'd heard her feisty laugh one last time. sorry he'd let them go to that battle. he should've stopped them, should've sensed it, should've seen it coming. should've felt more when he heard the news. what did these waves know about him? every seabird, every boulder must've had something to say about wretched, cowardly fallenshadow. the defector. he shook his head and scowled. when things were going right, he strolled easy past the flurryclan meadows. when things went wrong... it was always the beach. what would he do when he left? he would never be allowed to watch these waves again. he thought back to his days of bounding along the border with swallowflame. they had so much fun. life was good. everyone was happy. alive. he drew the old deathberries close to his chest. oh, swallowflame. funny, understanding, /stupid/ swa-la-la-la. when did life get so complicated? his eyes wandered to the sheltered nook he and heartspirit had conspired in. where this plan had first formed, hunched, on the verge of tears behind the boulders they'd scaled as carefree apprentices. he let out a sigh and smiled sadly to himself. his sister needed this move just as much as he did. she deserved it, too. she was too much of a sweetheart for this rocky place. he couldn't bear thinking about her living in fear. they relied on each other. with gracie and whale gone it was only them, alone and in hiding. ah, yes. whalerumble was gone. not... officially. his death hadn't been yowled out by any highranks. he'd just left one day and never came home. fallenshadow wondered. wondered if he was still out there. wondered how he'd feel to learn one sibling was dead and the others had abandoned him. fenn shook his head. no, he was gone. and a decision had been made. the waves were dark tonight. one crested early and crashed to the pebbly shore, sending up a flurry of white seafoam. he smiled as he couldn't help but be reminded of the pelt of his beloved. reveriecrown. she was what this was all for. she made every heartbeat and every heartbreak worth it. his heart warmed as he considered waking up beside her every morning. he chuckled as he recalled their last meeting. she was so caring. he blinked as he realised just the thought of her sparkling, ocean-blue eyes were enough to lift his spirits. oh, she was his new ocean, wasn't she? her cream cape his white sands and sunny seafoam, the gentle sound of her breathing his sea-song. that's what he'd do when he left. carry on watchin' the waves. rest easy.
