During the Mexicans' retreat from the Alamo after Santa Anna's death, Texan scouts were spotted. This led to a skirmish in which Mexicans and Texans exchanged fire. The Texans quickly retreated and alerted the Texan rebels at the Alamo. A larger group went out to reconnoiter the Mexican force. Shortly afterward, more scouts were sent out to see if the Mexicans had established camps. They returned reporting that, indeed, the Mexicans had encamped.
